2010-11 Cheerleader Tryouts

Fall Tryouts Coming Soon!

Fall Dates: TBA (September 2010)
Location: McLin #4
Time: 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Attire:             
Ladies- Black Shorts, Black Tank or Sports Bra, Hair Pulled Back w/ White Bow & Natural Make-up
Men – Black shorts, White t-shirt & Neatly Groomed

If you would like to be a part of the Raider Cheerleader program, complete the online registration form and the Spirit Coordinator will confirm your level of interest.

Special Tip: If you are interested in trying out for the team, please be sure that you are proficient in the required skills listed under the Cheerleading requirements section. As a suggestion, you may want to seek out a local gymnastics center so you can work on your tumbling and stunting skills.

In order to be considered as a tryout candidate, you must complete steps 1-3 at least one week before the tryout date. Get your paperwork in early!!

1. You must be a registered student of the universityNote: If you are transferring from another university, you must be accepted to the university by your dance audition or cheer –mascot tryout date.

2.  Complete the online application. Click on the link provided and please complete the comment section. Application link: http://www.wsuspiritunit.com/cheerapp.html

3. Complete the physical packet in its entirety. The completed packet must include a front/back copy of your insurance card and shot records with dates. You will also need to complete the insurance forms and the release forms. Please send the information via fax to the Tiandra Finch, Trainer at 937.775.2368. Feel free to email her with questions at finch.18@wright.edu.  You may also hand deliver your forms to the trainer; the mailbox is located on the third floor of the Nutter Center. (Room 356)

Additional Physical Packet Information:
      ☐ If you have a current physical from another sport, you may provide a copy of the physical versus paying for another physical.
      ☐ If you are a current WSU student and don’t have insurance, you may obtain insurance by emailing Joyce Smith at
          joyce.smith@wright.edu. Student insurance is very affordable.
      ☐ Please complete ALL forms and double check the information for accuracy.


Raider Cheer Squads & Requirements

Green Squad
This program is considered a sport!! Team members are treated like athletes and selected in the spring. Team members must adhere to the all practice, conditioning, game –day, appearance schedules and potential fundraisers.

Cheerleaders selected for this program will support soccer homecoming and men’s basketball games.

Tryout Requirements
Ladies**
Flexibility – Right Heel Stretch, Scale or Scorpion
Tumbling
      ☐ Standing – Back Handspring, Back Handspring Tuck, Standing Tuck and Toe Touch Tuck
      ☐ Running – Round-off Tuck, Round-off Back Handspring Tuck, and Optional pass
Jumps – Toe Touch, Pike and Right Hurdler
Stunting (taught at clinics)
      ☐ Coed - Hands Extension, Toss Extension, Hands Liberty and Optional Stunt
      ☐ Group Stunts – Elevator, Extension, Liberty and Optional Stunt
Motion Technique – Fight-song & Game Day chant (taught at clinics)
Dance Routine – taught at clinics
Personal Interview – 15 minute interview conducted by the Athletic Department Administration and Alumni
** Ladies tumbling requirements are stringent due to past cheerleading experience prior to college***

Gentlemen
Tumbling (no prior experience needed but a plus)
      ☐ Running: Optional pass (for those with prior tumbling experience)
Jumps - Toe Touch and Pike (taught at clinics)
Stunting (taught at clinics)
      ☐ Coed - Hands Extension, Toss Extension, Hands Liberty and Optional Stunt

Gold Squad
This program has a very light time commitment schedule outside of game day & potential fundraisers!! Team members will be selected in both a spring / fall tryout and must adhere to practice & game day schedule.

Cheerleaders selected for this program will support women’s basketball games.

Position Qualification Requirements:
Education and Cheerleading Experience
      ☐ Graduating Senior, Current WSU or transfer student
      ☐ 2.2 cumulative GPA
      ☐ Prior High School or All Star cheerleading experience (to include tumbling and stunting)
      ☐ 1-2 years of Coed and/or Double base stunting

Related Qualifications
      ☐ Strong work ethic
      ☐ Good interpersonal skills

Knowledge and Skills
      ☐ Strong planning /organizational skills
      ☐ Great Time Management skills
