Cheerleaders, Emerald Jazz and Rowdy Take Camp Honors
The Raider Cheerleaders, Emerald Jazz, Rowdy Raider and coaching staff attended the College Instructional camp in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina August 15-17, 2008 to prepare the Spirit Unit for the upcoming sports season and to certify the coaching staff on safety and liability issues.
The Raider Cheerleaders captured the Game Day title taking 1st place from a field of cheer teams that consisted of Division I-A, Division I and Division II teams of over 557 participants. The Cheerleaders used a variety of signs, megaphones, poms and flags to wow the crowd and the instructors. The cheerleaders also earned blue “superior” ribbons for both Game Day and Rally Day evaluations. By putting on such a stellar performance the Raider Cheerleaders earned a partial paid bid (2 free rooms) for the 2009 Collegiate Cheerleading National Championship to be held in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The Emerald Jazz dance team was crowned the Division I Team Dance Champions out of 7 Division I teams. Five dancers were nominated as All American candidates and Sabrina Salter, Kristina Lawrence and Tiffany Dykstra received All American honors. The team dazzled the instructors to receive a blue”superior” ribbon and earn a full paid bid (5 free rooms) for the 2009 Collegiate Dance National Championship to be held in Daytona Beach, FL. The Emerald Jazz dance team was the only Division I team to receive a full paid bid behind the UNC-Chapel Hill and Penn State Dance teams.
Our very own Rowdy Raider was named one of the Best All Around Mascots along with “Cocky” from the University of South Carolina out of 12 Mascots from Division I-A –Division II universities and colleges. Rowdy also earned All American honors.
These accomplishments were the “best” Instructional camp showing for the entire unit in the history of the Cheer, Dance and Mascot programs.
